Synapsis
People without any prospects fleeing in masses on huge boats. They helped to develop a new world on the other side of the Atlantic. A world which became the biggest economical competitor of the former colonial powers. Gertrude Stein’s monumental family saga is a modernist epic. She uses experimental poetics to question not only the well-being of the Western world in general but also to create a historiography for everyone who would otherwise be excluded. Schwald’s stage adaption swings between dramatisation and performativity, whilst bringing, in particular, Stein’s situational humour to the fore.
