Synapsis

Humanitarian aid is a notorious topic in the media. Help is made into something entertaining, pleasant and profitable. The aid industry greets us with posters in the street and accompanies us when we go shopping. It provides the means of existence for both the helpers and those in need. We can participate in the humanitarian adventure by mouse click from home - without any smell and at a safe distance. (…)

In LET’S PRETEND TO BE HUMAN, three actors study the vacuum of feeling that the culture of donation has created in us. “What exactly is helping?“ they ask, and also: “Why is helping more and more put into the hands of professionals and celebrities?“ They want to dive into the humanitarian adventure themselves, so they learn how to build a camp, how to organise a charity concert and how to experience solidarity in the slums. But helplessness soon takes over... Playing maliciously with media images, LET’S PRETEND TO BE HUMAN draws the image of a well-intended trip that won’t meet its optimistic end: the attempt to preserve a humanistic world view in today‘s globalized reality.
